About the authors

Thomas B. Newman, MD, MPH  is Professor Emeritus of Epidemiology & Biostatistics and Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco and attending physician in the newborn nursery of the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco. He has focused on practicing and teaching evidence-based medicine and on doing and teaching about clinical research for more than 30 years. He is also a co-author of Designing Clinical Research by Stephen B. Hulley et al, now in its 4th edition.

Michael A. Kohn, MD, MPP is Professor Emeritus of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco, where he teaches clinical epidemiology and evidence-based medicine. He is also an emergency physician with more than 30 years of clinical experience who retired from clinical practice in 2018. His other websites are sample-size.net and mkanders.com

Martina A. Steurer, MD, MAS (illustrator) is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco. She obtained her master’s degree in the methods of clinical research in 2014. Since then she has been teaching clinical epidemiology. She is also an attending physician in the pediatric critical care and neonatal intensive care units.
